Furan is a five-membered aromatic ring with four carbon atoms and one oxygen atom. 2,3-Dimethylbenzofuran is a chemical, fennel, and phenolic tasting compound. 2,3-Dimethylbenzofuran has been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as robusta coffees (Coffea canephora), green onion, arabica coffees (Coffea arabica), red onion, and garden onions (Allium cepa). This could make 2,3-dimethylbenzofuran a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. Based on a literature review a small amount of articles have been published on 2,3-Dimethylbenzofuran.
