Description | (13z)-beta-carotene, also known as all-trans-beta-carotene or solatene, is a member of the class of compounds known as carotenes. Carotenes are a type of unsaturated hydrocarbons containing eight consecutive isoprene units. They are characterized by the presence of two end-groups (mostly cyclohexene rings, but also cyclopentene rings or acyclic groups) linked by a long branched alkyl chain. Carotenes belonging form a subgroup of the carotenoids family. Thus, (13z)-beta-carotene is considered to be an isoprenoid lipid molecule (13z)-beta-carotene can be found in a number of food items such as orange bell pepper, loquat, papaya, and pepper (c. frutescens), which makes (13z)-beta-carotene a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products (13z)-beta-carotene can be found primarily in blood and breast milk, as well as throughout most human tissues. In humans, (13z)-beta-carotene is involved in the retinol metabolism (13z)-beta-carotene is also involved in vitamin A deficiency, which is a metabolic disorder. Moreover, (13z)-beta-carotene is found to be associated with endometrial cancer. |
